Lazy days and long evenings call for knitting you can take at your own pace where the stitches lean on the soothing, rather than the challenging side. A Break in Tide is a Tif Neilan design that includes rhythms and repeats that may surprise you, but won’t ever vex. This is knitting for sandy days on the beach or sunday afternoon-ing in the park.
Welcome to A Break in Tide, our latest iKnit7-with-Friends Knit-a-long. We can’t wait to have you join us on this relaxed and sunny KAL through the month of July. It’s our favourite season for this kind of knitting. And perfect timing for winding up with a wonderful wrap for the cooler evenings ahead.
The shawl follows a bottom-up construction, growing in a triangular direction with relaxing garter stitch followed by sections of Fisherman’s rib and slip stitch variations. The design starts gently with just a handful of sts and increases at the ends until completion. The shawl is then bound off along the top edge.
The fabric of the shawl has the look and feel of brioche but is in fact fisherman’s rib. There is no brioche knitting involved at all. We really recommend following the links to working the fisherman’s rib stitch. It’s not tricky but good to know exactly where your needle tip needs to go.
How Do I Join In?
The first step is to make sure you are signed up to the iKnit7 newsletter – all the essential KAL updates will be sent through this mailing list.
Then choose a kit. We will be going live with our Break in Tide kits on 24 June. Have a look at each of the kit options that we’re offering and choose the one with your preferred yarns and colours. Make sure you place your order in time for your kit to arrive before our Cast On party at 8pm on Friday 16 July.
Your kit will include all the yarn you need to make the shawl, plus a printed version of the pattern. Needles are not included in the kits so be sure to check whether you need to order them separately.
Knitting Together online
As soon as you order your kit, you can register and join our special Break in Tide KAL Facebook Group. Tif and the rest of the iKnit7 team will all be there too, as well as all the other knitters in the KAL. You can share pictures of your progress, ask for advice and see how everyone else is getting on. We’ll all be on hand to answer your questions and help out whenever you need that.
As well all the usual KAL chat and support, Tif will also be doing a Facebook Live video during the KAL to explain more about the fisherman’s rib and how to fix dropped stitches.
Grand Finale Cast off Knit Night
As a registered Break in Tide KAL-er, you’ll be invited to round off the KAL with a celebration of everyone’s Break in Tide Shawl at a virtual Knit-Night on Friday 27 August, complete with New England cocktails, and an it’s-a-wrap photo special.
